Now this is cinema. *insert Martin Scorsese meme*
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are approaching the status of director/actor duos that will soon transcend time. Burton/Depp, Dinero/Scorsese & Anderson/Schwartzman… to me, this movie cements Coogler/Jordan as a top cinematic duo. All these people mentioned, they just have a fantastic understanding and symbiotic movie making relationship. They all know how to work together and it translates so well on screen.
The visual aesthetic Coogler gives our eyeballs is simultaneously a buffet of new era cinema movie magic and panoramic views akin to Hitchcock. Coogler and Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the cinematographer, bring you on a ride. Especially know in a movie theatre world filled with cgi-tests, the practical affects showcases are great! it’s crazy that the minimal amount of cgi works here, less is more! I love watching a movie and being like “how did they film that?” that thought is here in large sums. From music transcending the multiverse to Smoke and Stack sharing a loosey, movie making MAGIC at its best.
I love the marketing for this movie, what’s better than one Michael B. Jordan? TWO Michael B. Jordans! Hahaha they made it seem like it was strictly a period piece with the first trailers released, and going into my first viewing, I completely forgot there were vampires in this thing. Coogler said he had this idea in his head for a long time. And it shows! Taking the Christopher Nolan approach of earning Hollywoods trust with big projects and now being able to create his own stories. I love all of the it. Ryan Coogler knows he has our trust, so for him to go off here, all gas no breaks, It feels so deserved and so worth a wait.
What is there to say about this cast that already hasn’t been said. Jordan & Hailee Steinfeld are known gems. But this new kid on the block, Miles Caton KILLS it as Lil’ Sammy. I think we’re all Stack in that old (at the time new) Jalopy of a car, we all were wooing with him when Sammy popped off those vocals. I was definitely in the theatre shazaming the songs during the credits.
Along with the amazing music, the sound design was phenomenal. From the strings on the guitar to the lunging in the sky, it was all peak. I dare say say this was a better vampire movie than Nosferatu outside of the blood sucking sound affects (albeit, that is a better horror movie as a whole) I give Sinners the edge in cinematic experience as a whole, I do regret not seeing this film in 70MM, as the transitions in aspect ration and Tommy gun shooting would have been remarkable in that way.
Any nitpicking things I have are arbitrary honestly, some pacing issues and the climax of the film has some things I would change to make something make more sense, but nothing that ruined my experience. However, I highly don’t recommend watching this movie with your teenage daughter…
Sinners is what cinema and storytelling is all about. All the flowers to Ryan Coogler and co.
