A very unique form of storytelling that stands up 20 years later. Strong performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet elevate this out of the box screenplay to something triumphant.
I wish I could have experienced this movie upon release. Jim Carrey going against type at this stage of his career would have left me shook as an eleven year old. This dramatic role? By… The RIDDLER?!?!?! say whaaaaaaa. There’s no way this would work, and yet the combination of self imposed different standards on Carrey and just his out of this dimension performance would have left a strong impression on me. To see this now as a 32 year old, I’m so moved by what’s happening here. The theme of love being worth the trying. Does removing trauma fix problems or create new ones? The strength of memories and the hold it has on you. There’s no way I could possibly express how I truly feel in written format…
For the time I would imagine this form of cinematic storytelling being experimental at the time. Nowadays you can see the influence from this film in other movies like
(500) Days of Summer & even Aftersun. For Michel Gondry to bring this vision that Charlie Kaufman thought of to life is such a euphoric feelings on the eyes. This movie was made at the right time as well. If this was put from conception to screen today, so much of it would have been low budget cgi, so the realism of things being actually in front of a camera helps add to it being able to stand up to cinema today.
The actual story and framing of the storytelling really got me hooked in. The plot circles back around and you have that epiphany come to you, and it’s done very beautifully here. They don’t spoon feed it to you and yet they show exactly what is going on. The climax with Joel and Clementine, it’s so relatable even though it’s a situation that most people would never be in, but what makes it relatable is that, if you’re a true believer in love, then yes, you understand. It’s strong, it’s powerful, and it’s love.
A generational classic to me. Romantic drama at its finest. Campfire storytelling at its best. Love at its best.
