Fun and creative thriller that, if you are a fan of the cast, will definitely put a smile on your face.
Surprising is the theme surrounding this movie for me. I was surprised I had never heard about it, surprised who was in it based on the brief teaser I saw, surprised that an IP of this magnitude would be so poorly promoted, and finally surprised that I really enjoyed this film.
The movie is made in the same way as the Searching series of films so again I was surprised buy the fact that Aneesh Chaganty & Sev Ohanian were not involved at all, but it’s not like they own this film medium. After giving it some thought, the Searching films were a little more creative in the presentation of their craft. War of the Worlds really just gives you a rinse and repeat of the same cameras and it isn’t until the climax that you see some out of pocket angles. Still, I think tackling this story in this way led to a very cool film that was fun.
The main cast of Ice Cube & Eva Longoria aren’t going to blow you away, but if you are a fan o their work like myself then you are in for a treat. Cube as a seasoned top secret government official and over protective Dad is the O’Shea Jackson role I didn’t know I needed until it was handed to me. You get all his catchphrases and gangster etiquette that you just don’t see from top secret computer nerds anymore. Eva Longoria is lovely and elegant as a Nasa professor or whatever she is.
Besides his children, I do fail to really buy into the relationships that he has with the other characters, but I think that’s because the script keeps them all physically apart and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these actors have never met in real life. The story is really on the surface, the acting is ok and the musical score feels AI generated to match the theme of the movie. However, the draw of the film is really the presentation and they do a pretty ok job of it to say the least.
At 90 minutes, this is an enjoyable movie to put on for a date night.
