This franchise can be just fine being purely animated.
It’s absolutely insane that people look down upon animation. As much as I have enjoyed the live action universe, if we had the entirety of Transformers in this medium than I would like it more honestly. They have so much more freedom in this space. A lot of people will say that the animation is fantastic (and it is) but you put Shia LaBouf in this movie as is then all of a sudden it’s CGI and then it sucks. Transformers One is stunning and man does it really make you feel that love for Transformers that I feel has been missing recently. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some live action dino bots and bumblebee, but 100% animation feels so much more at home.
Chris Hemsworth does a solid job here, I can already sense the hate, he does put a growl at the pitch of his performance to math Peter Cullen, but I think it works here. What holds it back for me for the experience is the simple fact that it is not Peter Cullen, however the decision for Hemsworth to try to embody that OG Prime voice makes sense and he does a great job, leave him alone! The rest of the cast is great as well, Scarlett Johanson and Keegan-Michael Key are fantastic and entertaining… Brian Tyree Henry brings a Shakespearian gravitas to D-16 and eventually as Megatron. Henry is talented and I love him in everything he does because of performances like this! D-16 has an entire arc in 90 minutes and the progression in Henry’s performance from sheep to dictator should be dissected in a lab and redistributed in a bottle to help improv struggling voice actors. His climax into Megatron is one of the best things I have experienced onscreen.
I think because of the fact that this is ironically not live action, that is part of the reason why it underperformed in the box office. A lot of transformers fans who would go to the movies probably would be put off by it having a target audience of children. Again, to my point that people undervalue animation, but I digress, the fact that this is not spawning sequels and has a complete lackluster “spinoff” on YouTube is one of the biggest fumbles ever. But hey, as of writing this they’re giving Josh Cooley a live action transformers gig, so hopefully he can… transform *smirks to camera* the current status quo of these movies.
Personally, I think this is just as good as the original 1986 movie, argue with ya momma.
