Supergirl (2026)

Oh yeah, this is gunna divide the internet…

I love throwing my 2 cents in this trillion-dollar industry of opinions. I see the arguments for all sides, as to why this movie sucks, why it’s awesome, or why it’s just ok. I personally enjoyed this movie. Coming from not reading the comic yet but being aware of it, if I want that story then I will read that comic. This movie is its own thing, and I like this thing. I didn’t love it, but I did feel a sense of fulfillment when I left the theatre.

I’ve seen that the general consensus is that Milly Alcock kills it as Kara Zor-El but the movie is ehh. I agree with that to an extent. Big movies like this that are made by committee with so many cooks in the kitchen. Even the best and biggest comic book movies you’re currently thinking of was made that way, sometimes you get Avengers: Infinity War and sometimes you get Morbius…

When it comes to the script, there are some things that work and some things that really don’t work for me. I think shoe horning Lobo in does feel unnatural, but because Jason Mamoa as Lobo is one of the best casting choices in the history of ever, I’m going to allow it. Although I do feel like a lot of the emotional weight does shine through, I do think a lot of the situations that get Kara to her breaking points are underdeveloped. At under 2 hours, I feel like the movie could have been longer to give characters like Ruthye more time to shine. I feel like that fundamental decision was to have the movie be under 2 hours to appeal to more audiences. If that is true, that is something I will never agree with, if you have to make a comic book movie about a non-popular character and worry about runtime, that business model is doomed to fail. Especially when you have a big wealth of quality to pull form such as Woman of Tomorrow, you should go story first. With the exception of G or PG movies, I don’t think runtime would affect butts in seats if the word of mouth is great. And say what you want about Rotten Tomatoes, those scores actually do matter to people willing to spend money on tickets.

For the hierarchy of this iteration of Supergirl, as stated early, Milly kills it here. I do think right now that Melissa Benoit’s iteration is the best still, but it’s unfair to compare the two. One had 6 seasons to flourish and the other has had about 90 minutes of screen time. The prior actresses (Laura Vandercoort in Smallville, Helen Slater in 1984) are just so different that it is incomparable to me. I also think Sasha Calle would have killed this role as well, she just had such piss poor writing for her in The Flash. We’re here now and I’m fully confident in this iteration of Supergirl and I’m so stoked that Milly Alcock is our Supergirl for this generation.

Lastly, people saying this will kill the DCU being the second movie are just saying that for clicks or have only seen comic book movies in their life. Do you know what movie that Supergirl is better than? 2010’s Incredible Hulk… you know, the SECOND movie of the MCU. Internet is so wild…
