Fly Me to the Moon (2024)

A fun combination of fiction and non-fiction and blends facts with alleged propaganda.

I personally do believe that we went to the moon but was always interested in the idea of it being staged. Here we get the best of both worlds (pun intended) and it’s a hilarious ride. Greg Berlanti takes the helm here and I’m a big fan of his style. He always finds a way to put in “Moon River” into all his projects and I love it. I think he also does a really good job at making you care about flawed characters and has a way to craft storytelling to make you relate to these out of these world individuals and genuinely root for them.

Scarlett Johansson is truly timeless. Not in just her talent but her looks, put a wig of any time period on her and she looks like she belongs. She really does nail the character of many identities really well. I think ScarJo is great at portraying characters with a lot of internal conflict, and I think she kills it here. Channing Tatum brings his charisma, and I think he has pretty good chemistry with ScarJo, their back and forth works and it is believable for the story. I love the rest of the cast as well, I thought Ray Romano’s character was useless at first but he does have an emotional payoff that I feel is necessary to the story. Lastly, I want to touch upon Woody Harrelson, he’s just good in everything honestly, he plays such a good antagonist, he’s very playful here and you know that that wasn’t in the script.

The set design is wonderful, I know grand designs are a minimum nowadays but having to create a fake moon set for a fake moon landing and a real moon set for the real moon landing is a very robust creative problem that I think they solve here. I think the screenplay by Rose Gilroy is great, but outside of explaining events, I don’t really think they captured how people talked in the 60’s-70’s that well, taking out historical events, this dialogue could have passed as a movie being made today. Same goes for the score, I think it adds grand space tunes, but I just don’t feel like this movie is taking place 50 years ago.

This movie is funny and I’m sure historically inaccurate, but like I said, it’s a fiction and non-fiction movie, take it or leave it.
