Jurassic World Rebirth

The dinosaurs are great, but it really felt like there was less dinosaurs than usual.

I think of ScarJo’s recent performances, this is probably her weakest. Not like the script gives her a lot to do, and she really tries but I don’t really care about Zora’s survival here. I noticed that when she doesn’t also help produce a movie, her roles aren’t that great, like her past films with Wes Anderson. The rest of the cast is ok, but they all are put in these boxes of the stereotypical characters stranded on a monster island. Leader, greedy investor, security, etc. You can tell who the death fodder characters are from the start and there isn’t anything that really surprises you on the human side of the film.

The dinosaurs, however, I think look great. I can totally see the nomination for Best Visual Effects although it will lose to Avatar. I know people will dunk on the CGI, but it’s honestly fine. I think Gareth Edwards is a good person to take the helm for this movie, but he does the same thing that he did in Godzilla, he takes forever to show you the Jurassic side, you know… the reason you tune in? He even does the same disaster flashback to start the movie and it’s a fine way to start a movie but just because he doesn’t kill off a movie star in the beginning does not mean you should keep doing it.

I think movie in its entirety is ok at best, it’s just pegged with a bunch of little problems throughout, and it adds up to a collective mess. I wasn’t a fan of all the exposition, they tend to do that a lot in new movies, especially soft reboots now, because they expect these films to go to streaming sooner rather than later and you gotta keep distracted people informed. Still, they should have just rebooted the whole thing, I don’t see the point in doing this just for the off chance you can get Chris Pratt on screen with ScarJo. I also pray they don’t do that since most of that budget would go towards the actors instead of the actual movie.

A big franchise movie like this can be judged in many ways, I will mistakenly try to judge it in all of them. I just think the soft reboot thing was not the way to go, they didn’t even use the John Williams score and referenced one character that I noticed. All things considered, it’s fun for the dinosaurs, but there isn’t enough of them, the story is super on the surface and it’s like 30 minutes too long.
