Scream 7 (2026)

This movie is entertaining due to nostalgia, but I do think it’s the weakest movie in the entirety of the Scream franchise, but by all means is not terrible.

I do feel like with the abruptiveness of Melissa Barrera, and consequentially Jenna Ortega, the studio decided to make up for it by spending extra money to overcompensate for the two new leads franchise actresses and I believe with all those things considered, that this movie ended up being the best that it could have been.

To fairly judge the movie, I must judge with what I have and not all the outside things that may or may not have affected the finished product. There’s a lot of things that just don’t make sense in the movie. I don’t feel like they explain anything from the previous movie, which matters to me since this is a franchise. The previous movie essentially ended with the power of friendship and establishing the “Core Four” moving forward, and why the lesser 2 of that core four is here and just don’t give a hoot about the Carpenter sisters anymore is strange. The Ghost Face Killer continues to just be a Juggernaut for no apparent reason. Cops only show up when it’s inconvenient. And suddenly Sydney Prescott has a family of almost 20 years, I must admit that I didn’t rewatch the previous movies in preparation like I did for 5 & 6, but I just don’t remember the mention of that.

I do think there is a lot of entertainment value here. There are some fun and perfectly comedic scenes to me (even if they weren’t intended on being funny). Having that one character return was always a pleasure to have on screen for my eyeballs and I was more in awe than thinking this character was menacing. It just sucks that the best parts of this film are the nostalgia.

The cast is ok, I don’t think the script does any of the cast any favors. If we’re handing the reigns to Tatum Evans, I’m not the comfortable with that since she doesn’t give me the same main character aura that Sydney Prescott did, and that’s her daughter. Melissa Barrera was able to do that in Scream 5 in my opinion. Also, when it comes to franchise characters, if you going to do a return, just go all the way… It’s already a crappy situation and just commenting on how silly it would be to pull the trigger is worse than actually doing it in my opinion.

When it comes down to it, what you want from a Scream movie is what you get here. It’s surprising to me that Kevin Williamson takes the helm in the director’s chair, but he just seems to lack an understanding of the IP he created when it comes to storytelling. Yes, I understand to try something new, but to have a Terminator like Ghost Face Killer even commit a murder that is straight out of a Nightmare on Elm Street flick just goes to show that you don’t need to take from other franchises when what you already have is special.

I still liked the movie, mostly because of the nostalgia aspect, and seeing Neve Cambell back is just an utter delight. Because she’s been playing the character for so long, she still shows that she is so entuned with Sydney Prescott. Outside of that one kill, this felt like a Scream movie, but almost as if it were a parody of itself. Like maybe this what those Stab movies feel like.

If you’re a diehard fan of the franchise, I honestly can see you heavily disliking this movie. If this was Scream 2 or 3 then I don’t think it gets this hate, but when you’re 7 flicks in, you should know better.
