Going to into this movie, I couldn’t really gauge what it would fully be about. Maybe it’s me but for Pixar, I really feel like the marketing campaigns by Disney has been subpar at best. Regardless, I really think this is one of the best Pixar movies of all time.
Since I’m a grown up, I think that animated movies are at its best when the humor can be something that all ages can enjoy. That just happens to be the case here, I found myself laughing really hard with my kids at the same moments and man that is enjoyable! Pixar gets a lot of flack for not living up to the standard of freaking Toy Story annually, but not every film is going to be a golden franchise. I do think that, even though Hoppers has such a great ending, you can definitely continue this story. There’s a lot of meat on the bone here, I feel like the animals and even the scientists have such fruitful and unexplored depth, and yeah, give me more Mabel. At its most simplistic core, this is a story about talking to animals, kids will literally eat this up for generations.
When it comes to the animation, it’s Pixar, that will never be in question. The score for this film was ok to me, Mark Mothersbaugh takes the helm there and I felt the same about his work in his last movie, The Minecraft Movie, but it does the job. I felt the stakes and gravitas via the voice acting. Piper Curda and Bobby Moynihans performances as Mabel and King George respectively. The whole cast really brings these characters to life. Don’t even get me started on the brilliance of Meryl Streep and Dave Franco.
This is a great and funny movie that’s enjoyable for all ages. It probably will end up being a Disney+ filler by the end of the day the way things are going, but Hoppers is definitely worthy of a strong fandom with longevity.
